War on Iraq: Stepping Stone to an Empire

Prompt Mailer 2

Mailer says that we are at war because Bush is trying to create an empire."Behind the whole push to go to war with Iraq is the desire to have a huge military presence in the Middle East as a stepping-stone to taking over the rest of the world." (51) By taking power in Iraq we will begin to spread democracy across the world and gaining more power with every gun shot.

Many believe this plot for world domination gives Bush too much credit. Although Bush is not the brightest politician out there I trust he knows exactly what he is doing. He surrounds himself with power hungry politicians to do his decision making and strategizing for him. I don’t believe that Bush really thought that he would have an empire by the time he was out of office but I do believe that he wanted to make a push into that direction. Once you start a war than it will not go away just because we have anew president in office. War has a chain reaction and is not easily distinguished.

Bush and his flag conservatives as mailer refers to them believe that if we go to war and obtain an empire it will solve all the United States problems. Flag conservatives believe that our younger generation will then all of a sudden be more interested in obtaining an education than doing drugs or having sex. In addition, our "immoralities" will be distinguished by American Pride.

I believe that we need to focus on our own country in stead of trying to fix others. Our so called “Democracy” isn’t working in our won country so why are we trying to push it on others. We think it’s wrong that the Muslim women have to cover every inch of their body and walk behind their husbands. But yet we suppress our own people such as those who are gay. If we spent half the energy and power on improving ourselves instead of using it change other countries we be going might have a chance at becoming the great nation we claim to be.

Power: False Sense of Security

Prompt: Mailer

Mailer says that we are at war because of power. He says we want power in the Middle East so that we can begin to have power over the world. Although I agree with this statement, I also believe America wants power so that we can feel secure again. Power gives one a false sense of security. Our security was shaken when the attacks where made against us on 9/11. We felt hopeless and unsure of ourselves. So what did we do we found someone to blame. We would have settled for anyone. So Bush and his advisors choose for us. Iraq is evil; they are the ones who should be blamed. Ok, we had found our target so we must get rid of the "evil" that has caused us to doubt ourselves. Although we have chosen Iraq for now it doesn’t stop there, Bush is not happy until he attacks everyone who may stand in his way of obtaining an empire. “Our war with terror,” Bush says ,” begins with al Qaeda, but it does not end….until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped, and defeated.”
Bush uses resources to obtain power in other countries. Oil is among one of the most demanding resources in Iraq. Therefore if Bush were to gain control over the oil, than he would have control over the people. He also uses water a bribe to the Iraqi people. Water is a resource all human beings need to live, making it high in importance. The Iraqi people can not live without water this gives Bush a huge upper hand

Power is compelling. It will make those who obtain it strive for more and more. Of course power can allow you almost anything you can imagine: money, respect, security etc... The list goes on. But power is very dangerous; it is addictive and never completely satisfying. Power is the major fuel for this war. Not only does Bush want power but we as Americans want power to feel control back into our lives.
